Walking to raise awareness of arthritis and autoimmune disease
More than ever, people with arthritis need support. The global pandemic has severely impacted charities income, with the cancellation of marque events such as the London Marathon and through a mix of Shielding and prioritisation of the Covid effort – arthritis treatments, joint replacement surgeries and support have been significantly delayed.
By pushing himself to breaking point and documenting the experience along the way – both via this website and Joel’s social media channels, he hopes he can raise awareness of the daily struggles of living with arthritis.
On Saturday 8th May 2021, starting at Knettishall Health in Suffolk, Joel will walk the 49-mile route of the Peddars Way to Holme next the Sea on the North Norfolk coast, followed by the 84 miles of the Norfolk Coastal Path, which runs from Hunstanton to Hopton-on-Sea.
Joel will be staying with supporters and in hostels along the way, meaning he will also be carrying everything he needs for the week on his back, in what is sure to be the ultimate test for his body.
Joel has had Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) most of his life, with onset just before his 11th birthday. Over the years, this has developed into psoriasis-associated JiA and Psoriatic Arthritis, meaning that this challenge will be especially tough on his feet and knees.
During the initial Covid lockdown, Joel was under the shielding guidance, and by May 2020, he was back on crutches due to limited access to treatments. So to complete this challenge a year later, will be a monumental achievement for him.
Follow on social media
Each day, Joel will be sharing his experiences to raise awareness of arthritis and autoimmune disease in the hope that it changes attitudes and raises vitally needed funds.
Your shares, comments and likes will not only help keep Joel going through this daunting challenge but helps us reach thousands of people as part of this event.
Remember to use #JoelvsArthritis so we can share your posts!
Millions of people wake up with arthritis every morning and face the day in pain, without the support and recognition they deserve. Arthritis attacks what it means to live and people with arthritis are often left to manage alone.
Versus Arthritis invests in breakthrough treatments, the best information and vital support for everyone affected by arthritis. Please sponsor Joel so that together we can overcome the pain, isolation and fatigue of arthritis.
Joel will be sharing his route each day and welcomes people to join him on the walk (socially distanced, of course!) along the way.
So whether you want to support him, have arthritis and use it as motivation to move more or simply want to share stories and be part of an event to raise awareness and make a change – it would be a massive help
We couldn’t have done this without the help of these amazing organisations and people. Thank you!
