Creative Writing on Chronic Illness

A predictable war

A poem from JoelvsArthritis about the current Covid-19 pandemic

Waking up to the realisation that these walls are my cage.
Until the summer, at least.

This feels like a dream, a surreal Hollywood screenplay.
You don’t appreciate your freedoms from a life lived in peace.

An invisible enemy threatens bodies of invisible illness.
Plus many more, it doesn’t spare the healthy or the fit.

The majority refuse to wake up to the threat.
Until everyone has lost someone, it’ll be too late to repent.

A scramble, a panic, and still massively unprepared.
Although the educated had warned for many years before.

Generations of prosperity, a throwaway credit boom.
The shock of their lives when they realise this is war.
